A brief history of York Rose Singers
It was a dream of Fred Bradbury, an avid music
lover and Honorary Secretary of the British Federation of Brass Bands,
to bring together the many choirs and musical societies of York to form
a large choir which would be capable of making music good enough to
help in celebrating York’s 1900th Centenary year in 1971. With
the support of York City Council and the Festival Committee his dream
came true. John Warburton was appointed musical director and,
under his guidance, the newly formed “Celebrations Choir” achieved a
high standard. Many successful years followed, with performances
locally and around the country, e.g. York Minster, the Albert Hall, the
Royal Festival Hall, and on Yorkshire Television.
In June 1986 the choir was renamed “York Rose Singers”.
Members have enjoyed singing many varied types of music, ranging from
sacred works such as Faure’s Requiem, Pergolesi Magnificat, Cherubini
Requiem, and Dvorak’s Te Deum, to secular music, including a concert
version of Merrie England, Hiawatha, Songs from the Shows and other
light concert pieces. Often, the choir sings for charity, for example
raising funds for a local teacher who went to Africa to teach, raising
money for resources for Park Grove Primary School after a fire in 1998,
as well as carol concerts in different venues around the city.
Money was raised for S.N.A.P.P.Y. (a disabled/able bodied organisation)
by giving a concert at Our Lady’s Church, Acomb, during the church’s 50
years Jubilee Celebrations.
These concerts have been led by dedicated Musical Directors who have
been instrumental in keeping the choir vibrant. Although smaller
in number (around 30 singers), the choir has the same aims and
aspirations to perform to a high standard set by the Celebrations Choir
in 1971.
New
recruits would be made very welcome by friendly members should you
have a ‘yen’ to sing with us in a cheerful atmosphere, under the
direction of our new Musical Director Tim Knight. If you like the choir
and would like to stay, please note that Tim will audition you in order
to assess your musical ability and 'fit' within the choir.
